Notes on Klara.

Klara is a solar-powered artificial friend in Kazuo Ishiguro's Klara and the Sun, and for most of the book she believes, with total sincerity, that the sun is not just a source of light but a source of goodness, something that can be petitioned, thanked, reasoned with. Ishiguro never lets the reader feel superior to that belief. He builds the whole novel so carefully around her literal, patient logic that by the end you're no longer sure the rest of us are right and she's wrong. She just believes with more attention than most people bother to.
